JUSTICE UDAY UMESH LALIT – 49th CHIEF JUSTICE OF INDIA.

Justice Uday Umesh Lalit is the 49th Chief Justice of India. He replaced NV.Raman who was 48th Chief Justice of India to become 49th Chief Justice of India. He took Oath in a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan. Several minister such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former President Ram Nath Kovind was present. Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will have 74 days tenure as the Chief Justice of India. After that most probably DY Chandrachud is on the line for the next Chief Justice of India.

The provision for Chief Justice of India is under Article 124 of the Indian Constitution. The Chief Justice of India is appointed by the President. Normally the President of India remain till the age of 65. He can also be removed by the impeachment. NV.Raman who was the 48th Chief Justice of India suggested the name of Justice Uday Umesh as the next Chief Justice of India.

Justice Lalit was born on November 9,1957 in Solapur to the family of former additional judge of Bombay High Court. He was transferred to Delhi and was designated as Senior advocate of Supreme Court in 2004. He was appointed as the judge of Supreme Court on August 13, 2014. It is the 2nd time that a person is directly appointed from bar as Chief Justice of India.
